Let me be REALLY clear- these are for your dogs. Not you Though my husband tried them and said they weren't bad. And my dogs scarfed them down. Success I think!
We have two amazingly sweet and funny Rat Terriers. They were both rescues. Clyde (the boy of the house) Came from Ratbone Rescue. An all around Incredible organization. I encourage you to check it out: Then there's Chloe- she is as sassy as they come. When we brought her home her eyes were a mess- always watering and crusty. She was miserable- constantly rubbing at them with her little paws. I began reading everything I could get my hands on in regards to allergies and nutrition and started making all of their food and treats. I took them off all Wheat Corn and Soy Products and noticed within days drastic changes in their energy levels and even the shininess of their skin. Best of all- my little Chloe no longer had any issues with her eyes.
Its funny looking back- oh 3 1/2 years ago now. Chloe's watery eyes are really what set me on this path of cooking and wanting these dogs (and us) to eat as healthy as possible. At that point I never suspected that I would have Food Intolerances- or that I would be spending endless hours in the kitchen creating recipes. But gosh- can I just say- despite the health issues I have battled- that I am SO thankful all of this has happened. I could not be more grateful for the place life has brought me.
This week as we pulled out all of the Christmas Decorations- I decided I wanted to make a tree for Clyde and Chloe. I started by hunting down bone ornaments. I quickly realized I didn't need to buy anything- that I had a pantry full of Wheat Free Flours. So- I set fourth to make these biscuits, wrapped pretty green ribbon around them and strung them to the a little tree. I think the tree turned out pretty cute. I plan to let them pull one treat off each every day till Christmas (Call it a Doggy Advent Calender if you will)
So while you are busy Making Christmas Cookies- Why not throw a Batch together for your Loving Pet?
Here's the recipe:
- 1 cup of Garfava Flour
- 1/2 Cup of Arrowroot Flour
- 1 Cup of Brown Rice Flour
- 1 TBS of Garlic Powder
- 3 TBS of Flax Meal
- 1 Tsp Beef Bouillon (granules or Better than Bouillon condensed)
- 1/3 Cup of Bacon lard
- 3/4 Cup of Warm Water
- Preheat oven to 350 Degrees.
- In a Large Bowl Combine the Flours, Garlic Powder & Flax Meal.
- Cut in the Bacon Fat and add the Beef Bouillon.
- Pour in the warm water and with your hands mix and kneed the dough together. Roll out and cut into shape of your choice (I went with the traditional bone shape)
- Place close together on baking sheet (they will not change their shape) and bake for 25 minutes.
- Remove from oven and allow to cool before giving your dog(s) a Taste test.
This recipe made about 2 full Large Cookie Sheets of Biscuits. Feel free to use different flours- in the place of the Brown Rice Flour you could try using Millet or Sorghum. Feel free to use a different Fat- Olive Oil, Walnut Oil, Coconut Oil- Whatever you would like. If you are looking to give the treats some coloring try using Beet juice to make Red Bones or Spinach to make a Green Biscuit. If you do this- use the vegetable colored liquid in place of the water called for.
